Raven Denim Fall 2010

Raven Denim, a premium denim line presents a second foray into menswear with its fall 2010 lookbook. The Raven spirit – inspired by a raven’s inky blue/black plumage – focuses on a range of masculine denim fits with impeccable tailoring and cut. Premium fabrics, imported from Italy and Japan, are designed, hand-crafted and produced in Los Angeles. The resulting jeans are pared down; clean silhouettes, as well as vintage, lived-in looks.

The Raven Denim collection includes riffs on the all-American 5 pocket jean: Vic Slim Straight, Sid Slim Skinny, Leo Classic Boot and Joe Relaxed Fit, along with a classic trouser cut, Max. Functional denim elements become design details. These include oxidized hardware, plaid pocket linings as well as double and triple stitched seams that highlight tailoring. Having tested two of the models myself I can highly recommend Raven’s denim, especially for the grown up rocker types among you who would like a hassle-free pair of jeans.

Tony Ward 'on the run'

Wrangler’s premium jeans sub-brand, Blue Bell, continue the innovative digital presentation of their collection with the launch of the new BB FW10 website. This time, renowned male model Tony Ward, wearing the dark, sophisticated denim of Blue Bell’s Fall/Winter collection, is chased in a dark, damp, industrial landscape. Viewers can throw him from a ladder, tear his clothes off, make him jump and roll – all thanks to clever interactive technology, which allows you control and dictate Tony’s movements and clothing. The collection is dark as night, inspired by rockabilly perfectionism, the 80s-influenced-by-the-50s, and thrift store Americana. Colors are black, grey and white, with dark indigo a signature of the brand.

Diesel Black Gold Spring/Summer 2011

In her second season as creative director for Diesel Black Gold, designer Sophia Kokosalaki went to the Milan runway with a wink to sartorial construction. Work-in-progress details appeared on the hems of jackets and shirts, such as the image of a measuring tape. Meanwhile, the brand’s core – denim – was worked every which way in terms of washes and treatments, resulting in the premium jeans the label is known for.

Again Pure Premium is rooted in authentic denim and work wear, modernized with new developments in denim and contemporary design. Designed in Kansas City and produced in the USA, Baldwin Denim is the creation of Standard Style Boutique’s owner, Matt Baldwin. The first collection focuses on the core styles of straight and slim/skinny jeans, all of which are made from raw denim that either comes from Cone Mils’ famous White Oak Plant in the USA or Kaihara Mill in Japan. Thanks to ingenious interactive technology, visitors to bluebelljeans.com will be able to control renowned model Tony Ward’s actions – and even tear the shirt right off his body! The new site also showcases the s/s 10 collection of Blue Bell by Wrangler. Premium denims, washed extreme or rinsed clean, are worn contrasted. Fitted chinos are paired with a destroyed denim jacket over a fresh check shirt. Clean blue jeans combine with a washed-out denim shirt and Harrington jacket. Influences are vintage denims, classic 1950s styling and Western Americana.

“Seattle sound, grunge style, mixing and matching, comfort and love for details” was the motto of the Replay fall/winter 2010-11 show at Amsterdam Fashion Week. The denim fixed collection didn’t stray from Replay’s signature style, and shown the Italian brand’s strength in mixing a plethora of influences to one cohesive look. Jeans came in all shapes and washes with details like studs, chains and various emblems, and were matched with checkered shirts, motor jackets and army print cardigans. A standout piece was the plaid denim shirt, matched with a plaid denim vest on top, showing Replay’s innovative approach. All outfits were strong, powerful and well styled, as we come to expect from this premium casualwear brand.

This time on RADAR we turn our attention to the rare and outstanding One Jean. Ex-Evisu and Levi’s designer Mark Westmoreland has produced a jean for all of us denim heads. A combination of vintage features from Levi’s, Lee, Boss of the Road, Stronghold and Wrangler; The One denim jean was created over a year ago – the end product of a prototype that took Westmoreland four years to produce, in conjunction with the Shiotoni brothers of Japan. The One brand was created to fulfill a simple, practical need to produce an exemplary jean – irrespective of label – that pools the collective knowledge of jean makers worldwide. This is denim’s greatest hits united in one pair of trousers.

The US cotton used to produce the One jean is dyed and woven near Hiroshima at a family run mill. This 14oz denim is loop dyed and comes in its unsanforized loom state. An exclusive 100 pairs of ‘One’ jeans will only be available from five retailers worldwide. Find out more here.

Creative Director Wesley Hartwell has reinforced the NOBODY ideology for spring 2010 by establishing an innovative, refined and luxe treated denim collection. The new spring collection features distinct design elements mixed with effortless fashion edge like enameled hardware and uniquely treated fabrics. Every piece of denim in the collection is sourced from the finest Japanese denim mills. The range embodies authentic vintage styling with each distressed detail hand-worked into the fabric to create a unique style. Denim shirts remain a massive direction for the brand and the spring 2010 Men’s collection offers a wide range of denim shirting made from different lightweight fabrics. A top favorite of ours, Amsterdam’s DENHAM the Jeanmaker continues to establish itself as a top-notch denim brand. While launching its new and innovative website the Dutch label introduces its spring/summer 2010 collection titled “The Foreign Office”. DENHAM’s primary inspiration for the season holds a strong stylistic nod to the golden era of the “gentleman spy” operating in hot-weather cultures of north Africa, India or Arabia, think Peter O’Toole in Lawrence of Arabia or Michael Caine in 1968′s Play Dirty.

The new season sees a further evolution of DENHAM’s emerging utility-tailoring approach. The gritty craft ethic expected of a hardcore jeanmaker including evocative new wash, resin and aging recipes is dramatically updated with unexpected soft-tailoring techniques and is then further modernized by an arsenal of distinct and inventive details. Much of the denim developments this season are inspired from the DENHAM GARMENT LIBRARY – the labels unique archive of authentic design specimens. In conjunction with the collection’s theme, a lot of attention was also given to Khakis and the invention of “modern chinos”, manifesting in new cuts and finishes.

Dutch premium denim brand Blue Blood has realigned its business.

Owner and creative director Steve te Pas set up a new business called Blue Blood International together with Joseph Sfez and Martine Mang, who are operating the Hong Kong and Los Angeles locations of the HTP Group. As a result, the brand’s headquarters will move from Amsterdam to New York this year, with the US east coast acting as the new location for the design department. Furthermore, te Pas, who remains creative director of Blue Blood International, will move to New York. As te Pas explains: “Blue Blood has a good image, good product and good people. But we want to target more audiences. For this we also need new pricing. People want more value for money. With HTP Group we can provide more commercial retail prices of 40 % less.”

In the future retail prices for denim will range from €120 to €160 compared to €200 to €300 as in the past. The pricing will also stick as production will move to Hong Kong where HTP operates its own factories. In the future, about 90% of the collection will be made in China and 10% will be made in Italy and Japan. Blue Blood, however, will remain a luxury brand. Te Pas adds: “We are still working with the best quality, but using synergy effects in production.” In addition to better pricing, the new partnership also enables Blue Blood to react faster to current trends. “Delivery will be much faster and better as we can react quite close to the market,” te Pas says.

Under the roof of the new company that has the license for Blue Blood trademark, the brand will be distributed by different partners worldwide. The former headquarters in Amsterdam will remain the distribution center for Northern Europe and also host the retail department as Blue Blood plans its European rollout for next year.

Currently the label has five stores in Holland and one in Cape town. Three more should open in 2009 in the Netherlands.

As promised, recently re-launched denim brand Evisu, now with Scott Morrison at the helm, is going back to its roots for the 2010 spring/summer collection. As can clearly be seen in the following images the construction and fit are cleaner and simpler than before, emphasizing new washes and updated detailing. The seagull logo on the back pockets, once an oversized identifying mark of the brand, has gone through reduction and fading resulting in a more subtle, contemporary style. Every jean in the capsule collection (to be followed by a full collection for A/W 10) is named after a point of interest in Japan, giving ode to Evisu’s beginnings.
