Yeah… this one took us some time, but it’s finally here. Surprisingly enough, New York’s fashion week menswear presentations were dull with denim compared to those of Milan and Paris. Why the surprise? Well, Americana is the driving force and theme of many a denim brand these days, so we thought America’s fashion designers will catch up with the trend. That said, we still got some pretty cool denim pieces from the expected denim aficionados like Gant, Rag & Bone and Robert Geller. So without further ado here’s our round up of all denim looks from New York’s spring/summer 2011 fashion week.

G-Star NY Fashin Week Runway Show

A Desert Denim theme anchored the NY RAW Special Edition Spring/Summer 2011 collection of denim brand G-Star during the New York Fashion Week runway show. This season’s collection fused desert-inspired, functional details with a sandy-beige palette which was alternated with blue and black combinations and G-Star’s signature 3D-sculpted raw denim pieces.

New-York based menswear label Dana Lee just updated their site with a new lookbook featuring the spring/summer 2011 line up. The lookbook is once again shot by Jody Rogac, applying her delicate eye to the classic and minimal collection by a designer we like to refer to as the American Margaret Howell. Gilded Age Spring/Summer 2011 Men's RTW

Inspired by the Pan Am Clipper voyages at the dawn of luxury air travel, Stefan Miljanic, designer/founder of NY based Gilded Age, had privileged young men landing on a remote Pacific island in his mind for the label’s SS11 collection. Outfitted in casual blazers and fine sweaters, camp shirts (some with aloha prints), faded jeans and twill shorts, with leather duffels in hand, the looks add up for a perfect summer’s weekend wardrobe.

After Milan and Paris fashion weeks it was New York’s designers turn to strut their fall 2010 stuff down the runway at Bryant Park’s tents. Fashion week men’s prominent trends: 90′s revival, urban warrior and English-inspired left little room for denim, but we still managed to dig up a few interesting looks like Eric Kim’s rocker-meets-equestrian to Michael Bastian’s modern preppy for Gant.

Fresh colors anchored the NY RAW Fall/Winter 2010 collection of denim brand G-Star at the Hammerstein Ballroom. Bright Yellow, Nassau Blue and Car Green complemented G-Star’s traditionally dark palette for coats and jackets, while new light denim washes were added to the established dark raw denim range.

The unique G-Star signature combination of raw and tough mixed with sophisticated and luxurious could be seen in brightly colored, elegantly tailored coats in heavy gauge cooked wool, paired with worn-in denim pants. The inspiration for this season’s NY RAW collection came from the authentic, highly sophisticated service uniform worn by 19th century coach drivers. G-Star combined a formal A-line silhouette with hard-ware luxury materials and fine tailoring resulting in a modern interpretation of the classic Coachman Coat.

G-Star’s denim craftsmanship was demonstrated with the further evolution of the 3-dimensional Arc Pant, adding an inside flare to create a distinctive new silhouette for both men and women. An aggressive new denim wash used blunt-knife abrasion to give a destroyed look to the denims, while high-end customized tailoring repairs were further demonstrations of denim expertise. Denim innovations on show bronze and blue metallic treatments and a unique ‘denim felt’ finishing, created by pulling brightly colored, 100% merino wool through a denim base.

If the cast of “Gangs of New York” was obsessed with impeccable suits, artisanal organic denim and cashmere underwear, they’d resemble the fall lineup at Gilded Age. Designer Stefan Miljanic has finely honed a hand-crafted, turn-of-the-century aesthetic that was beautifully evident in his cozy plaid shirts and rich Fair Isle sweaters paired with elegant tailoring and vintage Chippewa boots — for a look both masculine and lush.

Welcome to the Wild West, William Rast-style. Justin Timberlake and Trace Ayala blended a tribal motif into their leather-heavy fall lineup. In men’s wear, a strong sense of utility was tempered with a bit of bohemian romance. If Vietnam-era rockers went camping in the Mojave Desert, they might have worn these fringed motorcycle jackets, army fatigues and distressed jeans. White ruffle-fronted tunics were paired with snake-embossed skinny pants for a touch of rock ’n’ roll Baroque. Even if it’s not exactly innovative, this label just might have the stylistic chops to contend with the European giants in its category.

In her first collection for Diesel Black Gold, creative director Sophia Kokosalaki showed a predictable outing that married Diesel’s hard-edged urban vibe to her softer aesthetic. Men’s looks toggled between redneck and Goth style, but the lineup mostly broke down to clean, versatile pieces with a tough edge, like flannel shirts, leather jackets and vests, and scoop-neck T-shirts. Jeans came in faded blue or pitch black, and were fashionably slim but not clingy.

Dutch premium denim brand Blue Blood has realigned its business.

Owner and creative director Steve te Pas set up a new business called Blue Blood International together with Joseph Sfez and Martine Mang, who are operating the Hong Kong and Los Angeles locations of the HTP Group. As a result, the brand’s headquarters will move from Amsterdam to New York this year, with the US east coast acting as the new location for the design department. Furthermore, te Pas, who remains creative director of Blue Blood International, will move to New York. As te Pas explains: “Blue Blood has a good image, good product and good people. But we want to target more audiences. For this we also need new pricing. People want more value for money. With HTP Group we can provide more commercial retail prices of 40 % less.”

In the future retail prices for denim will range from €120 to €160 compared to €200 to €300 as in the past. The pricing will also stick as production will move to Hong Kong where HTP operates its own factories. In the future, about 90% of the collection will be made in China and 10% will be made in Italy and Japan. Blue Blood, however, will remain a luxury brand. Te Pas adds: “We are still working with the best quality, but using synergy effects in production.” In addition to better pricing, the new partnership also enables Blue Blood to react faster to current trends. “Delivery will be much faster and better as we can react quite close to the market,” te Pas says.

Under the roof of the new company that has the license for Blue Blood trademark, the brand will be distributed by different partners worldwide. The former headquarters in Amsterdam will remain the distribution center for Northern Europe and also host the retail department as Blue Blood plans its European rollout for next year.

Currently the label has five stores in Holland and one in Cape town. Three more should open in 2009 in the Netherlands.

The massive khaki coated canvas duffle bag feature soft cotton canvas handles and adjustable shoulder strap. Mother Nature is not the common inspiration for a denim brand, but for New York based denim label 4 Stroke Spring/Summer 2010 is all about going back to its roots. Titled “Mother Mother” the labels latest offering is paying homage to nature by focusing on natural wear organic, pima cotton and Japanese denim. The line feature lighter washes along with light whiskering and wear & tears on lightweight, super-soft premium fabrics. Although Mother Nature’s ruggedness plays a big role in the design, 4 Stroke has yet to lose its modern, New York City edge.

“Our past collections have relied bravely on experimental denim fabrics, so with spring we wanted create a more true denim story,” says Nate Freeman, the brands creative director. “We wanted the jeans to look like they were broken in naturally like your favorite pair you just will not throw away. Of course we left room for some fun too. It wouldn’t be 4 Stroke if we didn’t.”

After Milan‘s abundance and Paris‘s innovation, NY’s fashion week brought little news denim-wise. Most notable were designers’ efforts in taking a rather tailored approach to the usual casual use of denim, with jeanswear as formalwear, as seen best at Lacoste, Richard Chai and Robert Geller. Also worth mentioning is the colored jeans trend, which we saw growing in recent seasons and apparently is here to stay. Pick your own best from the rest after the jump…

Probably the most internationally acclaimed denim brand to come out of the Netherlands, G-Star has gone a long way since its birth in 1989. But has it gone too far? Looking at the brands S/S 2010 collection (shown Tuesday at NY fashion week) one can’t help but wonder where were the denim? For a brand also titled as “Raw Denim” the selection was a bit on the poor side. Saying that – we must also acknowledge G-Star’s sleek fusion of workwear and formalwear, done in the meticulously crafted and detailed way we come to expect from these Dutch innovators.
