Brand new KLAY was launched in 2010 by the French Collectif Saint Sauveur, it is definetley not big man clothes, more like for tall individuals. Their modern, raw and authentic silhouettes and denim really caught our eye, all fabricated and hand made in Japan. KLAY’s pieces can be found at shops like Guild (USA), Journal Standard (Japan) and L’ECLAIREUR (Paris).

BRING ON THE NOISE Autumn/Winter 2010

Established in early 2007, Japanese men’s clothing label BRING ON THE NOISE has been quietly making a name for itself since. Inspired by music and counterculture, founder and designer Daisuke Konno creates a look fit for rebels with an advanced sense of style. Upon the launch of the label’s autumn/winter 2010 lookbook we asked Konno to tell us about the new collection and his future plans for the label.

Can you describe your creative process? What inspires you?

For this collection, I began to reconsider an underground culture in Tokyo again and went to various live houses to feel the atmosphere and look for something special.

Usually I take inspiration from variety of things like old photo books, vintage clothing, and fliers you can find at musical venues, as well as other things. Anything with a musical element is always inspiring.

Your new AW10 collection “Tokyo Rockers” is out now. Can you tell us about it?

Rock scene boom lost its momentum in the late 1970′s. Bringing about a breakthrough, musicians gathered and played gigs continuously in many parts of Japan. This movement is called “TOKYO ROCKERS”. The season theme is the movement spawned in the late 1970′s and early ’80′s, dawn of Punk. The brand pursues originality no other brands can create.

What are your goals for your brand?

I’d like people in the world to see and feel my collection in their hands!!! I hope I could have my own store in New York in the near future!

uniform experiment Fall/Winter 2010

Japan’s uniform experiment FW10 lookbook is out now and we’re excited to share it with you. Since we haven’t mentioned the brand here before (yeah, we should have), a little introduction first: uniform experiment was launched by SOPH as an experimental project for men’s clothing in 2008. The collections are designed with focus on research, detailing, elaborate graphics, quality materials and color themes. UE’s new fall/winter collection features a mix of classic garments, from denim to knitwear and outerwear, influenced by military and navy uniform, mountaineering and formal wear.

45rpm X Pantofola d’Oro Mid Sneakers

Japanese (I swear we’re not running a theme) denim and clothing brand 45rpm have teamed up with PDO Gold, the vintage-inspired line of Italy’s eminent sneaker maker Pantofola d’Oro. The result – these fetching leather/hickory denim tennis shoes, also available in a leather/white canvas version. Both models sport suede accents and come in low and high tops.

Haversack SS11

Japan’s Haversack spring/summer 2011 collection is mainly inspired by menswear from the 30-40′s. Easy to wear, functional and well-tailored 40′s casual wear is restructured and given a new balance for an understated, luxurious and modern day wear. As always the collection is divided into three lines: the Haversack label features items deeply reflected by military uniform and hunting wear, accentuating the collection’s masculinity and elegance. In Haversack General Garments the collection takes the essence of French labor wear from the 1900′s and sailing cloths. Finally, the Haversack Attire label is influenced by the 30-40′s upper classes’ resort fashion of Riviera and Palm Beach.

Sportswear International talked to Jason Denham, founder of the Dutch denim brand Denham, about the label’s recently opened second worldwide store in Tokyo and the expansion plans for Japan and the rest of the world. Here, Jason Denham also talks about the major themes for S/S 2011.

Denham has just opened a shop in Tokyo, which is the brand’s second store worldwide, after its first stand-alone store in Amsterdam, the 495 shop. Why did you pick Tokyo as a location?

First of all, we think Japan and also Asia on the whole is a very important market in the future, whether it be trend wise or in economic terms. Furthermore, you can find great factories here which use innovative techniques for washes. We already produce a large part of our collection at local laundry facilities. We still have a smaller team in Tokyo than at our headquarters in Amsterdam of course, but we will put a lot of effort in enlarging our presence here — this will happen step by step. I also have a very personal relationship to Japan because I have been travelling there for 15 years now and I love the culture and the taste-level of Japanese people. It’s an honor for me to open a store here now, especially in my favorite district of Tokyo, Daikanyama.

Is the store similar to the store in Amsterdam?

It is similar in terms of the idea of presentation. Like our HQ store in Amsterdam which combines the shop, design studio and showrooms all under one roof, the denim house in Tokyo also gives space to the shop as well as a little design studio with a workbench, just in a smaller concept.

What is the retail and expansion strategy for Denham?

We are already very successful in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, the UK and Italy. We believe strongly in private retail. We would like to have stores in the most important cities of the world. At the moment we are looking for locations in Paris, London and Düsseldorf. We have also recently set up offices in London and Paris in order to settle there more permanently. Next to our private retail plans, we also want to grow with shop-and-shops. In February, we started with a shop-in-shop at Selfridges in London, which already is a fantastic success. And of course wholesale is also very important for us — we need good partners. That’s why we are very selective. Right now we work together with about 300 retailers worldwide.

Inspired by jeans from the 1880′s and made with sewing machine from the 1920′s in Okayama, Japan, the J.F.DIGGS-887 (LIMITED EDITION) is the work of Stevenson Overall Co. (SOC).

SOC was launched in 2005 by Atsu Tagaya and Zip Stevenson (from HTC) after the latter found a namesake company had existed in Indiana before the Great Depression, and, being a self-proclaimed denim freak, decided to revive it.

The basic concept of the Stevenson Overall Co. is to make high quality clothing for the ‘workers’ of today (creative/curious and unconventional types): “To make our collections, we start from examining early functional clothing (workwear, military, outdoor) from the 1800′s to the 1960′s and then take the best ideas in them and mix them with our own to make garments that can be worn today with a nod to yesterday. We get to make them from the best materials available in collaboration with the best people in the business”.

With earlier stints at Japan’s “Denime”, Fukuoka based designer Go Fujito launched his own denim brand FUJITO in 2002. Placing an importance on production by craftsman at all times, FUJITO offer all Japanese-made items including blousons and shirts as well as denim that are simple yet have refined beauty. Here’s a look at the brand’s F/W 2010 collection entitled “Nikolai”.

Almost unknown outside Japan, SPELLBOUND was born in 1981 at Kojima, Okayama Prefecture; the birthplace of Japanese jeans. Placing values on material, sewing, processing, and the workmanship handed down over generations in this district, their aim is to add the “present = innovation” in their creations and to ‘conquer’ the international market with their product.

Autumn/winter 2010 sees the basic, casual denim line in which the original texture of materials and the used look created by gifted craftsmen are both constructed into the modern silhouette, with attention given to good authentic sewing and details. SPELLBOUND creates the season line in which the practical details and materials of working wears, military wears, and outdoor wears are reconstructed into the modern silhouette and design. All products are MADE IN JAPAN.

Using a specially developed uneven thread used for warp and weft throughout the Vintage collection, these 13 oz Japanese Selvage denims by Edwin are produced on shuttle weaving machines, the two elements combining to create a feeling of old fabric. The Selvage, named 日の丸 Selvage (Hinomaru Selvage) was designed to reflect the colours of the Japanese National flag. The wash is made to look like the denim is worn out with uneven colours across the denim including the extension & contortion of around the waist that vintage denim provides. The denim is carefully worked by skilled craftsmen to get the desired results… Pretty cool, huh?! Gotta get me a pair of these!
