Sweden’s skinny jeans champion, Cheap Monday, present their autumn/winter, somewhat shady, catalogue: “The AW 2010 collection gives an apocalyptic impression but with a sense of hope for the future; holes are mended and scarring is used as decoration. Razorblade slashes are repaired on both denim and jersey; patches are used together with spray paint and coatings in rough detailing. A rawness and nomadicity referring to futurism and punk suggests a DIY aesthetic.” Take a look.

The Fall/Winter 2010 collection from Edwin is steeped in influences from America’s colorful and historic past. The influences resonate the dislocation and in turn ‘accidental freedom’ experienced by the post Vietnam late sixties generation where particular focus falls on the road and escapism. It’s not about running away it’s about embarking on the journey of self-discovery finding identity as an individual in a dysfunctional era. It’s a new dawn in society and the sub culture is about to get loud proud deep down and dusty!

The garments and overall collection styling represent the emotions and physical experiences gained through adventure and a ‘work hard, play hard’ hedonistic mentality.

Dust, dirt, grit, grime, beer and blood infect the washes of the denim giving a genuine ‘lived in’ feel. The shirting, jackets and knitwear are heavy and utilitarian representing the protective layer needed when living life alone on the road and on the edge – it’s the uniform of the nomad, the costume of the loner.

Try to imagine this: it’s the late 80′s, somewhere in the USA between Portland, Seattle and New York, classic rock is falling and the alternative music scene is rising: welcome to noise, hardcore, grunge and shoegazing. If you think it’s the opening scene from some kind of a teen horror flick, well, you’re wrong. The time when fashion has become anti-fashion is the background to April77‘s s/s 2010 collection. The androgynous and unkempt appearance, minimalist styles and contradictory trends: this is the DNA of the French fashion/record label’s ‘Youthful Abandon’. The classic open end denim that’s thicker, darker and coarser than ring-spun denim reflects the second hand mood of the collection. The vintage influence, as well as the strong Americana spirit -with references to Native American patterns, cowboys’ shirts and preppy style- gives Youthful Abandon an authentic story to tell. And the link to today’s rebels? Clothing is only made of natural fabrics, emphasizing the strong involvement of April77 to be a cruelty-free label.

I already gave you a glance at Norsea’s s/s 2010 catalogue a short while ago, and now it’s time to take a look at their autumn/winter 09 one titled “Three Day Millionaires”. Sea and seamen are still key inspirations for the collection, dedicated to the fishermen of the North Sea, but this time it’s more workwear than sportswear; complete with jackets, heavy knits, plaid shirts and tight jeans.

The brand is an amalgamation of local workwear, utility clothing and classic sportswear from the 50’s and 60’s – spun and reworked into a modern collection. Although they’re called cheap Monday, and use cheap materials for the back set of their photo shoot, there’s nothing cheap in the overall result.
